Interior & Exterior House Painting Tips

House Painting - Interior:

The easiest and best approach, of course, is to hire Renovation Pros! But, if you have a small project that you want to tackle on your own, here are some DIY tips.

1. Slosh Your Brush

Before painting, slosh your brush in whatever solvent you will be using at the end of the day to clean the brush (i.e., water for latex, mineral spirits for oil, etc.) It'll be easier to clean when you're done.

2. Wrap Brush or Roller

To avoid cleaning your brush or roller at the end of the day, wrap it tightly in a plastic bag and put in the freezer. This should only be done if you plan on using it again within a day or two.

3. Latex Gloves

Latex gloves are great for keeping your hands clean (especially if you're using oil-based paint!).

4. Wet Edge

Always keep a wet edge as you paint, and work away from that wet edge. If you paint over a dry edge, you will get overlap marks.

5. Avoid Cheap Roller Covers and Brushes

Cheap roller covers leave fuzz on the wall. Cheap brushes leave streaky brush marks. Avoid multi-packs of rollers. Pay the extra few cents and get better tools. It'll be worth it in the long run.

6. Test for Loose Paint

Will the existing painted surface take new paint? You can test this by applying a strip of duct tape to the existing surface and then ripping it away. If flakes of paint come off, you may need to scrape and sand the wall.

7. Low-Stick Masking Tape

Also known as "blue tape," this tape comes off easier and doesn't peel off primer or existing paint. Blue tape, by itself, will save you at least an hour of frustration over the old-style beige masking tape.

8. Rein in Your Paint Can Opener

Paint can openers, those little metal keys (you do use one, don't you?) are notorious for getting lost in the shuffle. Chain it to a small chunk of wood just like a public bathroom key. Whatever you do, just don't lose it!

9. Painting Process

Paint in this order:

1.Ceiling
2.Walls
3.Trim
4.Cabinets
5.Doors

...and remember to always paint from top-down.

House Painting - Exterior:

While homeowners often put off repainting their homes as long as possible, such procrastination can end up costing them in the long run. An excessively wet winter, for instance, will increase paint failure, damage to siding, and internal water damage. As you know, water damage will require far more expensive repairs! It is our experience that it's best to tackle this home improvement job as soon as you sense the need.

Painting Tips: Siding
If you think it might be time to paint your house, we recommend taking a walk around your property to examine your siding. Look for areas where your siding is no longer protected by paint. Wood rot and water damage are obvious and clear indicators that it is time to break out the brushes and get to work! If these issues are obvious, the best thing you can do is act quickly to head off larger problems in the future.

House Painting Tips: The Touch Up
If you don't have any painting emergencies, the next thing to look for is significant chipping, flaking, or other areas where the paint is failing, If so, it's probably wise to paint the entire home. If you're not sure, give us a call and we'll give you an honest assessment based on our years of experience. However, if the rest of your house looks like it's holding up okay, you may just need to do a little touch up work to get things up to snuff.

If a little touch up work is all your exterior needs, purchase one bucket of good primer and another bucket of exterior finish paint that matches your home's current color. Home Depot has an excellent paint department that will match colors, and advise you on the best types of paint to use. Once your paint and brushes are ready, begin by scraping and cleaning the areas first, then slop on a layer of primer for protection. Once that has dried, touch up the primered spots with the finish coat that matches the rest of your house. If you stay on top of touch up jobs, you can postpone a complete exterior paint job by up to a couple years.

House Painting Tips: Trim
Other than siding, trim is the next most common problem area. If the paint on your trim is showing signs of wear, or if the trim is showing signs of water damage, it's time to take act, and quickly! Damaged trim is evidence of water seeping into areas where it shouldn't be. Perhaps the house was not properly caulked, sealed, and primed before painting. If water is getting behind the trim, it's probably seeping into other areas of your home, which can result in more serious problems. Assess the damage, and then repair and replace the trim as soon as possible. Make certain you set the trim properly, and take care to ensure that everything is thoroughly caulked, sealed, and primed when you fix the problem.

Testimonials

We just wanted to send a quick 'thank you' for a job well done. We are truly amazed. We have never had a construction project be handled like a business transaction. Your crew was quick, neat, unobtrusive, and efficient. The crew started on time every day, finished as agreed, and left everything tidy. Not only that, your company came in under budget and was easy to communicate with. We're very impressed. Everything was taped off, covered, and organized. We wanted to send some before and after photos to show the job. Thank you!
